Prolonging the life of your laptop batteries
Modern laptop batteries are made from a metal known as Lithium-ion and are reliable and durable. Typically, a standard Li-ion battery will provide an average of between 300 and 500 discharges.
For normal usage it’s reasonable to assume that a modern laptop battery will last between 1 and 2 years before it needs replacing.
There are many factors which affect the ultimate life of a laptop battery but there are certain measures you can take in order to get the ultimate life from your batteries:
- Recharge the battery regularly and avoid fully discharging wherever possible.
- Try to keep your computer in a cool place - excessive heat will shorten the life of your battery considerably. Never attempt to freeze a battery.
- A battery has a finite life span, even when not used. So avoid buying spares until you actually need to use them.
- Use your laptop with the a/c adapter wherever practicable - there is no point using the battery unless you need to.
- When using your laptop on battery power try to adopt good working habits such as closing applications which are not being used and avoid having several programs running all at once.
- When not in use hibernate the machine rather than leaving it on stand-by and if left for long periods turn it off all together.
- Adjust your laptop settings to be the most energy efficient - brightness and sound levels especially.
